Going through a major life change, like a divorce, can put your mental health at risk. According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, every year, major depressive disorder impacts approximately 17.3 million adults in the U.S.

Dealing with child custody battles, property division and other divorce-related issues is challenging and can make it difficult for you to remain productive. But there are steps you can take to protect your mental health and improve your ability to cope as you go through this trying time in your life.

Share your feelings

Isolating yourself from the people you care about during your divorce can get in the way of positive relationships, reduce your concentration and elevate your stress levels. Talk to your friends and family members about your feelings. You should also consider joining a support group to share your experience with others going through the same thing.

Explore your interests

Try out new activities you always wanted to do during your marriage. Additionally, take time to make new friends, volunteer for a cause that interests you, invest in new hobbies or sign up for a class to learn a new skill.

Take a break

You may not feel like yourself during the divorce process and for a period of time afterwards. This may affect how productive you are at work and how much you can do for your children and others at home. Give yourself permission to step back from your regular roles so you can re-energize, heal and regroup.

Make physical health a priority

Your physical health can have a big impact on your mental health, so commit to taking care of your body. Prioritize eating well, exercising regularly and taking time out to relax. You should also try to refrain from using drugs, cigarettes and alcohol as a way to cope with the emotional difficulties of your divorce.
